Office of Worship at 601 S. Jefferson, Springfield, MO 65806 US - Clarification on Holy Days of Obligation

Clarification on Holy Days of Obligation

Questions have been raised as to why November 1st and January 1st are not being observed as holidays of obligation in 2010.

In 1991, the U.S. Bishops voted to lift the obligation of attending Mass for U.S. Catholics on three specific holy days of obligation, whenever those feasts occur on a Saturday or Monday. The three feasts are: January 1st, the feast of Mary, Mother of God; August 15th, the feast of the Assumption and November 1st, the feast of All Saints.

When those days fall on a Saturday or Monday, their Liturgical celebrations remain the same. However, the obligation to attend Mass is removed. All baptized Catholics are encouraged by the Church to celebrate those feasts by attending Mass. If you further questions please contact Fr. Paul McLoughlin in the Office of Worship at 417-866-0841.
